Make a Difference: Become a Trustee at Woking & Sam Beare Hospice

Woking & Sam Beare Hospice and Wellbeing Care [the Hospice] is a people-centred charity providing specialist palliative and end-of-life care across North West Surrey that embraces not only our patients, but also their families, friends, and communities - because care extends beyond the individual.

If you are driven to inspire generosity, build powerful relationships, and unlock new opportunities for our Hospice, we would love to hear from you. Your expertise could help transform lives, diversify our work and secure the future of our care.

Our strategy is focused on delivering outstanding care for generations to come.

Our Vision: To enable all those with life-limiting illnesses to live life to the full and to equip them to die with choice and dignity.

Our Mission: Woking & Sam Beare Hospice is a people-centred charity, providing outstanding hospice care for every community in North West Surrey – delivered with compassion, excellence and financial resilience.

We are seeking an inclusive and values-driven leader who brings:

What are we looking for?

  • Strategic Vision: The ability to navigate complexity, balance drive with direction, and guide our long-term sustainability.
  • Leadership Experience: Prior Board-level, executive, or significant senior leadership experience (charity, healthcare, or commercial sector).
  • Governance Expertise: A strong understanding of charity law, risk management, and effective board governance.
  • Advocacy & Engagement: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage stakeholders, build partnerships, and act as a passionate ambassador for the hospice.
  • A clear commitment to delivering compassionate, person-centred care aligned with hospice values.
  • A connection to the North West Surrey community is desirable.

The impact you will make.

This is a deeply rewarding leadership role. As our Chairperson, you will lead our Board of Trustees and work closely with our Chief Executive and executive team to shape our strategic direction, helping safeguard the Hospice for generations to come.  You will ensure our charity operates with the highest standards of governance, financial rigour, and regulatory compliance, all while championing our core values of dignity, compassion, and inclusivity.

What’s in it for you.

Serving as our Chair of Trustees offers immense personal fulfilment and the opportunity to make a profound, lasting impact on the lives of local people when they need it most. You will be joining a highly respected organisation with a dedicated and skilled team of staff and volunteers.

Commitment: This is a voluntary, unpaid role.

Time commitment: Over the course of the year, you would be expected to attend up to approximately 22 Board and supporting Committee meetings. Meetings are usually held in person in the early evening, with some flexibility to attend remotely.

Whilst much preparatory work and 1-to-1 catchups can be scheduled flexibly, if other meetings and ambassadorial are included, time commitment is likely to be 5-7 days per month.

How to apply

We celebrate diversity and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. We do not discriminate based on disability, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, or any protected characteristic.

If you are inspired by our mission and would like to help shape the future of compassionate care in our community, we would love to hear from you.
